watches In 2006, while working as chief warden at Kibaale national park, Charles Tumwesigye realized that local communities would often enter the park illegally to set snares for wild animals and cut trees for timber.
high quality replica watches for men The underlying factor was that the community did not appreciate the park's importance. This caused Tumwesigye a great deal of distress as the chief warden because the actions of the community were depleting wildlife and leading biodiversity loss in the park.
copy watches However, all that changed when Dr Collin Chapman, a researcher and primatologist at McGill University, Canada, visited his office one day and offered to help manage the park. Tumwesigye asked Dr Chapmann to help mobilize funds for a clinic near the edge of the park to provide cheap medical care to the community.
replica watches He believed the community would receive cheap health care and then appreciate the importance of conserving the park. He was right; the clinic instantly became a success and Tumwesigye used the opportunity to preach the message of wildlife conservation.
high quality replica watches "We are now expanding it to have a mobile van so that it can be able to reach those people who cannot make it to the existing clinic because of distance," said Tumwesigye.
copy watches It was the success of the health clinic near the Kibaale National Park, among others, that enabled Tumwesigye win won the prestigious 2013 national Geographic/Warren Buffet award for conservation. Previously in 2012, he was nominated for the same award but didn't win.
Tumwesigye, a believer in wildlife conservation, has tirelessly worked for 18 years to reduce conflict between wild animals and communities that live near the parks. For example in the late 1990s and early 2000s, while working as a monitoring and research warden in Queen Elizabeth national park, he realized that a lot of people from the various communities nearby were encroaching on its land because it lacked marked boundaries.
This forced him and other wardens to survey the boundaries of the park and demarcate them with concrete pillars, but this was not without trouble.
"Some communities threatened to kill me and my team if our work resulted in them being evicted from the park but because we believed that this was one of the ways we could reduce conflict between the communities and the wild animals, we had to demarcate the park boundaries and convince those who had encroached on park land to leave peacefully," Tumwesigye recalled the challenging times.Uganda Uganda Upbeat Over Peace Talks
