Former Tiffany’s exec pleads guilty to stealing jewelry By David DesRoches on July 30, 2013 in Lead News , Police & Fire · 0 Comments

tiffany The Darien woman and former vice president of a division of Tiffany & Company pleaded guilty on Friday to one charge stemming from a claim that she stole more than $1.3 million in jewelry while employed at the renown diamond dealer.

tiffany and co Ingrid Lederhaas-Okun, 46, faces up to 30 years in prison after being accused by the FBI of stealing jewelry from her former employer and selling the jewels to a competitor.

cheap tiffany “I knew it was illegal to steal, and I did so regardless… I’m very sorry,” Lederhaas-Okun told the court, according to the Associated Press .

replica tiffany Sabrina P. Shroff, a public defender who’s representing Lederhaas-Okun, told The Darien Times that her client “pled within three weeks of her arrest as she wanted to accept responsibility for her actions and start making restitution.”

tiffany silver Shroff said her client agreed to pay $2 million in restitution, in addition to paying for Tiffany’s legal counsel.

tiffany silver The alleged scheme began to unravel in November 2012, following an announcement by Tiffany’s that it was going to undertake a full physical inventory review. Lederhaas-Okun told the company that approximately $1.5 million worth of jewelry that she had checked out would have to be written off, the FBI said.

The items that were reported missing when Tiffany’s performed its audit included numerous diamond bracelets, platinum or gold diamond drop and hoop earrings, platinum diamond rings, and platinum and diamond pendants, according to the FBI.

After taking the jewelry, she then allegedly sold it to another company, a leading international buyer and reseller of jewelry with an office in midtown Manhattan, although the FBI has not released the name of the buyer.

The jewelry reseller paid for the merchandise that Lederhaas-Okun had stolen either by paying her or her husband in transactions arranged either by Lederhaas-Okun or a friend working on her behalf, the FBI claimed.

Her husband is not being charged, and neither is the female friend, according to court records. Money made from the transactions was deposited into a bank account that both her and her husband have access to, records show. He was allegedly paid through her friend a total sum of $580,040, and Lederhaas-Okun received $714,585, according to court documents.

The FBI reviewed 31 transaction forms, and said the buyer sent Lederhaas-Okun roughly 75 checks that were then deposited into her and her husband’s joint account. At least one check was in the amount of $47,400, records show.

Lederhaas-Okun sold more than 200 items to the unnamed company, although she is only being accused of selling 165 pieces of stolen jewelry. The FBI said that she signed a waiver on each sale that indicated the jewelry was hers and “free of any legal encumbrances.”

Town records show that her and her husband have lived in Darien since 2004. Her husband purchased their home for $625,000 in 1997, and the couple renovated the home in 2004. It’s now appraised at $3.1 million, according to town records.

Lederhaas-Okun is charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of interstate transportation of stolen property, the later of which she pleaded guilty, according to her lawyer.
